Cost over replacement value
Dividing maintenance cost by replacement value lets you compare different plants and years, regardless of size.
Low cost isn't always good: if it falls while MTBF falls too, maintenance is being deferred, not optimized.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate maintenance cost as a percentage of replacement value?
Divide the annual maintenance cost (labor, contractors, parts and materials) by the replacement value of all maintained assets.
What is a good percentage?
The 2% to 5% range is the most widely cited for industry. Below 3%, it's worth checking that maintenance isn't being deferred.
