Why measure backlog in weeks
Pending hours alone say nothing: 500 h is a lot for 2 technicians and little for 20. Dividing by weekly capacity turns the number into a lead time.
The 2 to 4 week range is the most widely cited: you can plan ahead without letting demand go stale.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate maintenance backlog?
Backlog (weeks) = estimated hours of pending work orders ÷ (number of technicians × productive hours per technician per week).
What is the ideal backlog?
The most common benchmark is 2 to 4 weeks. Below that, demand may not be getting recorded; above it, the crew can't keep up.
