MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR)

Reference ranges are indicative and vary by industry, asset type and operating regime. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Inherent availability

It's the fraction of time the asset is ready to operate, considering only failures and repairs. Operational availability also includes logistics and administrative delays, which is why it is usually lower.

There are two ways to raise availability: fail less (MTBF) or recover faster (MTTR). The calculator shows how much downtime that means per month.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate equipment availability?

Availability = MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR). With an MTBF of 175.5 h and an MTTR of 4.5 h, availability is 97.5%.

What is the difference between inherent and operational availability?

Inherent availability considers only failures and repairs. Operational availability also includes waiting for parts, logistics and administrative downtime.
